Eveleigh Railway Workshops'
2005 oil on canvas 25 x 51 cm
Since these canvases of the area in front of the Heritage Store & Suburban Car Workshops were painted in 2005, the tracks have become overgrown with grass and weeds.
By 2012, all heritage rolling stock that was stored outdoors, such as the Dynamometer carriage, has been dispersed, to Thirlmere and beyond.

The interior of the Heritage Store  looked like the last scene of 'The Raiders of the Lost Ark' - mysterious piles of things  ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous stacked in apparent chaos.
The 'Paint Store' area to the north was cleared out in 2012 and many heritage items were either removed to Thirlmere, put into storage or sold.

I can be briefly seen scampering into the shed at the end of this video.
I then climbed on board for the 3801's last run to Robertson.

Painting 'Thomas the Tank Engine'
in the 'Large Erecting Shop' at Eveleigh
This steam locomotive is about 120 years old & no longer operational.
This was its first ever visit to Eveleigh.
It arrived at the 'Large Erecting Shop' from Thirlmere at about 1.30pm & departed for Central about 5am Monday 23rd August, so I had to work quickly!

By 5pm it was too dark to do any more painting, and lots of the shunters were gathered around to take photos of it.
These photos of me, my painting and Thomas the Tank Engine are courtesy of one of my friends from the 3801, at the 'Large Erecting Shop'.

One of the most luxurious railway carriages in Australia, the Governor General’s Carriage was commissioned in 1900 and designed in the Chief Mechanical Engineers Office (at North Eveleigh).

On 17 May the carriage had its first run. In 1920 it was used by the Prince of Wales, when he laid the foundation stone of Parliament House in Canberra.
In 1927 it was used by the Duke and Duchess of York when they visited Australia to open Federal Parliament.
In 1954, it was used by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip during the royal visit to Australia. In 1992 it was donated to the Powerhouse Museum, and now is housed at Thirlmere.

Nice images - this was my neighbourhood growing up and every day we heard the whistle blow to schedule the worker's breaks and leaving.
